If you're looking for a unique and festive gift for the furry friends in your life, look no further! This blog highlights some of our most popular holiday items - but there are still plenty of other things available at the bakery as well!

We are excited to be selling Three Dog Bakery branded mugs! The mugs are dishwasher & microwave safe and come with a package of our holiday Peanut Butter Rollover Rewards or Miniature Spearmint Biscuits.

Our pre-made stockings are a quick and easy way to pick up a nice assortment of things! Filled with a toy, rawhide and some of our tasty biscuits, these stockings are sure to be a hit with the lucky dog in your life.

Looking for something nearly indestructible for the enthusiastic chewer? We now carry naturally shed elk antlers – weather hardened; these antlers are durable and not prone to cracking or breaking like other bones. They’re great for dogs with bovine allergies, help to scrape tartar off of teeth and wont stain your carpet (or in my case, my dog's white legs!). We carry sizes for every dog from extra small to ‘jumbo’!

We have a bit of everthing for our holiday toy selection this year - some toys have a chew guard lining or a tighter weave to help protect against the more aggressive chewers. If your dog takes delight in 'killing' their toys ask us for de'tails' on which toys are most likely to survive the longest! (Piper gives the Christmas Wreath 2 paws up!)

Our holiday collar charms are on sale for just $5.95 this year! We have everything from snowmen and candy canes to ho ho charms, so swing by the bakery to pick up some Christmas bling for your pups today!

For a limited time only:

Soldiers' Angels

Iraq War Veteran Troy Yocum and his three year old Shiba Inu Emmie are hiking 7,000 miles across the United States over the course of 16 months to gain support for military families in need.

Their goal is to raise 5 million dollars and "further spread the word that our American Heroes are fighting just as hard at home as they do overseas. We hope to provide a peace of mind and lay the foundation for military families in need to succeed."

As Troy and Emmie walk, Troy carries three unique items with him: a drum to literally drum up attention and financial support for Soldier’s Angels, the same ammo can that helped to collect 1 million dollars towards the construction of the Vietnam Memorial, and a Louisville Slugger baseball bat which takes the shape of a memorable petition form towards the creation of a National Day of Deployed Soldiers.

Three Dog Bakery is proud to sponsor Emmie as she hikes alongside Troy. We will be supplying Emmie with the food and treats she needs to endure this amazing 15 month hike for our heroes.
We also wanted to do our part to help here at the store on the Plaza! So from June 14th-23rd we will be donating $1.00 from every Flag n Wag Cookie to Soldiers’ Angels, the organization Troy & Emmie are walking for.

Show your support for this fantastic mission by stopping by the bakery for a few Flag n Wag Cookies! Your dog AND Troy & Emmie will thank you!

May Food Drive a HUGE Success!

May was "National Food Drive for Animals Month" so we began looking for a rescue, shelter or animal welfare group in Kansas City that could really put our food to good use. After much debate (there are so many worthy groups here!) we chose Chain of Hope.

Chain of Hope is a 501(c)3 organization formed in 2010 with the primary goal of alleviating the suffering of abused and neglected animals within the urban core of Kansas City. Their ultimate goal is to break the chain of ignorance, break the chain of suffering and break the chain of unwanted litters.

Founder Kate Quigley travels to high poverty neighborhoods in her personal car with volunteers looking for dogs in need. If they should see a dog in need they work with owners to improve the living conditions for that animal. Sometimes this means educating them on proper dog care, other times it means delivering food, water bowls or dog houses. Last year Kate and her volunteers convinced 1,000 cat and dog owners to have their pets spayed or neutered, donated 95 dog houses and 14,700 pounds of dog food to families struggling to care for their pets properly.

The final amount donated for the food drive by Three Dog Bakery customers was an amazing 1,165 pounds!

Three Dog Bakery founders Mark Beckloff and Dan Dye also wanted to help Chain of Hope, and have agreed to donate $7,000 for the purchase of a new cargo van to use in delivering food and supplies to dogs in need in the Kansas City area.

We will be presenting the dog food and check to Chain of Hope at the bakery on Friday, June 4 at 9:00AM.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the food drive such a success!!!

Taking 'Paw'some photos of your pets

Photography has been one of my favorite hobbies for several years now. My favorite subjects are my pets- mainly because they don't run from the camera and cover their face with their paws! For my crew the camera means treats and praise so they are happy to model for me on a regular basis. I know this isn't the case for many people, so I have put together a few tips and tricks to help you get a great picture of your pet!

Be patient and flexible:

Your dog has no idea why you're waving around a treat and meowing like a cat. It's totally normal for your dog to jump up and run to you! Just place them back in the general area you want, tell them to stay and start taking pictures again. Be flexible in the final picture you're looking for- they're going to move and that's okay! Be sure to keep sessions quick, and don't forget to give them a bit of that treat you've been using to keep their attention every now and again. You want them to think getting their picture taken is the best thing that has happened all day!

Change your perspective:

Everyone can take a picture standing up and looking down at your subject, but that can make for pretty boring pictures. Get creative! Crouch down at your dog or cat’s level or take a picture looking up towards them. The trick is to keep taking pictures of the same subject from different distances and heights.

Photobucket

Zoom In:

Who says your picture needs to have your entire pet in it? Or even that the focus has to be on their face? Close up photography opens up plenty of opportunities get unique pictures of your pet that still highlight their personality and what makes them special.

Photobucket

Dreaded Red (Green?) eyes and blown out pictures:

The easiest way to fix both of these problems is to find somewhere with adequate light. I’ve always had the best luck when I can utilize natural light. Try placing your pet by a window and switching on an overhead light if that isn't quite enough. The best time of day for pictures is early morning or evening.

Look like a pro on a budget:

You don’t need thousands of dollars worth of equipment to achieve great pictures. I have a backdrop stand made out of PVC pipe and shower curtain rings, and my backdrops are either a few pieces of fabric draped together or a couple of king sized sheets.

For lighting the cheapest thing to do is purchase 3 work lights from Home Depot (mine were around $10.00 a piece). When buying light bulbs any that advertise as producing white light are what you want. Incandescent bulbs will cast a yellow hue to your pictures. It also helps if at all possible to position your backdrop near a window to catch all of the natural light you can.

Photobucket

Post your results to our facebook page(http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kansas-City-MO/Three-Dog-Bakery-Country-Club-Plaza-KC/136162551756?ref=ts), we are excited to see what you all come up with!

Three Dog Bakery Product Relaunch!

On May 1st Three Dog Bakery will be launching our new products and packing in stores! Some of your old favorites will be getting a facelift with a new name and packaging but the same great taste. Lick-n-Crunch for example will now be 'Classic Cremes' and in addition the flavors you're pups have grown to love there will also be golden cookies with carob or vanilla filling. Yum!

Some other favorites getting new flavors are:

Mini Biscuits (formerly Itty Bitty Bones) will be adding a vanilla flavor in addition to the current peanut butter flavor.
Gracies Garden will be adding apple and banana flavors in addition to the current carrot and sweet potato flavors.

The new packaging design is a tribute to the company’s 20 year history of loving and serving dogs. To show our continued commitment, we are partnering with the local non-profit group Chain of Hope. Chain of Hope works to alleviate the neglect and suffering of animals while also providing education to promote responsible pet ownership. We will be donating any products leftover from previous packaging design to the group as well as holding a food drive the month of May.

Chain of Hope founder Kate Quigley will be here on Saturday, May 1st at 10:00AM to help kick things off. Purchase a bag of Three Dog Bakery® Bakery Blend Food for Dogs as a donation to show your support for Chain of Hope. All food purchased in the month of May for Chain of Hope will be discounted- $2.00 for every large bag and $1.00 for every small.

We will be giving out samples of our new products to furry customers all day on Saturday and Sunday so be sure to bring them along to check everything out!

Sit...Stay...Relax!

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that here at Three Dog Bakery we believe in spoiling our pets! We love to treat them to the finer things in life which is why we began hosting SPAW Night.

What is SPAW Night might you ask? Doggie massage! Every month or so licensed massage therapist Bree Plaster comes to the store and does 15 minute massages on some very happy dogs. Aside from the obvious reason that it feels pawsitively wonderful, massage can help with a variety of other things for dogs of all ages:

• Puppies can benefit from massage by learning to be handled and touched on all areas of their bodies. This socialization makes later trips to the vet and groomer much less stressful on everyone involved.

• Athletic dogs can benefit from massages to warm up the muscles and increase blood flow before an event, and afterwards to loosen up tight muscles and prevent stiffness. Massage can also speed up injury recovery because of the improved circulation helping to move toxins out of the body.

• Dogs with arthritis can get pain relief from massage as it loosens stiff muscles and stiffness. Massage also releases pain killing endorphins.

• It is also a great way to help relax a dog that is stressed out because getting a massage releases chemicals called cytokines.

Our next SPAW Night is this Thursday, April 22 from 5-8PM. A 15 minute session is just $10 so call us at the bakery (816-753-3647) to book your slot!

First Aid For Your Furry Friend

What would you do if your dog ate the bag of chocolate you left sitting on your counter?

You clipped a nail too short?

If your dog chased Peter Cottontail into a bush and ended up with a laceration above its eye?

Accidents happen to all of us- including our pets. Having a well stocked first aid kit designed with your pets in mind will keep you prepared in the event that something happens.

There are plenty of pre-made options available on the market starting at around $20.00 and going all the way up to $60.00. You can also put together your own by purchasing a small plastic tote and filling it with the items listed below:

• Sterile Gauze Pads
• Bandage Roll
• First Aid Adhesive Tape
• Cotton Balls
• Tweezers
• Scissors
• Hydrogen Peroxide
• Antibacterial Ointment
• Sterile Eye Wash
• Benadryl (Contact your vet in advance for dosing instructions)
• Quik Stop or a small bag of flour or corn starch
• Contact information of both your regular vet and the nearest emergency veterinary clinic.

Living in the Midwest means we also get some damaging storms both in the winter and summer. I like to stock my first aid kit with a few extra things so that I am prepared for that as well:

• Spare collar and leash for each dog
• Shot records
• Current photo of each pet
• Proof of ownership

For those of us who compete in sports with our dogs, visit the dog park or travel it is important to keep a kit in your car as well! Remember to pack a few extra items in this kit such as a clean towel, bottle of water and collapsible bowl.
